How do you design a museum that holds no objects?
As Bright White Ltd we conceived of this cutting edge experience and won an open European tender to the value of £2.5M ($5M) to design and deliver the project. Bannockburn tells the story of two kings and the battle that defined Scotland. With a strong historical record but no attributable objects we created the worlds first fully digital on site museum experience and changed the landscape of museum interpretation in the UK.
Digital forms of interpretation dominate the visit. Leveraging the benefits of digital media to provide a unique and powerful experience. The interpretive scheme uses multiple digital storytelling techniques and minimal use of written word.
The world’s first Multiplayer Cooperative Battle Simulator is at the core of the visitor offer, surrounded by motion capture battle scenes in a 3D immersive environment. Every visit is unique: the visitors are the decision makers leading their troops into bloody battle.
My responsibilities were diverse across the project and included the design of audiovisual media; marketing material; inscriptions on an National Monument; exhibition design; immersive 3D spaces; game design for a 30 person Battle Simulator; and the creation of a anaglyphic 3D graphic novel to continue the story outside of the visit.
This project won numerous major awards such as AHI Excellence in Interpretation, the Museums and Heritage Award for Innovation, and Best Visitor Experience from ASVA.
